And I tested the patience of most employers, family, friends and, I presume, strangers who stumble over the things I write. For instance, when the response is, “Because I say so,” I know I’m dealing with an authoritarian. If it’s, “Because that’s the way we’ve always done it,” I know I’m wasting time trying to learn anything of value here unless I’m exploring traditions or blind faith. Then they’d tell me something that was enlightening, and that always led to more questions. It’s the opening of the mind to new information and being willing to challenge what you think you know.
